One way that authors create
suspense is characters working against a deadline. An example from Trash is
when Raphael, Gardo and Rat try to solve the mystery of Jose Angelico’s death
before police officers can catch them, the entire book is based on this as it
is a continuous chase around the city to try to solve the mystery. The first clue they found was a bag at the
dumpsite which had a key inside it that looked like it was from the train
station but since they where poor the train station could have multiple guards
or anything else there to prevent any poor kids from getting through, the
second clue is the package at the train station that was going to be sent to a
prison to Gabriel Olondrez, Jose Angelico’s grandfather. The third clue was the
bible that Gabriel Olondrez had which they got by the Prison guard Marco it had
the ability to crack the code in the package they found in the locker.
Another example is Conflict this occurred when Raphael
was arrested by the police and taken to the police station. This is a type of suspense because you don't know in what ways Raphael was going to be hurt or if the police officer was going to let go of him when he was dangling out the window.
Another example that is going to
be talked about is using details to create the air of mystery is that in the background it said to be cloudy and all that and
you’ll hear things about a hurricane setting this weird feeling that you want
to know if the hurricane is going to hit or not encouraging you to keep going
and reading to see if you’ll ever find out.
The last example is the readers knowing more than the characters, for example in the book Rat knows that Father Julliard changes the password to the safe every month but writes it down in his diary because he can't remember, this is suspense because you don't know how Rat knows the password or what the password would be.

Spencer I really enjoyed your post. You have described well how Mulligan creates suspense, especially through characters working against a deadline. Remember you were supposed to choose 4 different ways authors create suspense and introduce each type. This is unfinished.
ReplyDeleteBad luck, Spencie. Hope you can do better next time.
